Red State (2011)
While watching Kevin Smith's (Dogma) new horror flick, I instantly remembered the documentary called Jesus Camp. The film is revolving around a religious cult which kills sinners (yeah, they are crazier than the nuts seen on Jesus Camp), I mean "gay people", even a three-way with a woman is an abomination. So three teenagers who look for sex are entrapped by a fake on-line ad and soon they find themselves in a *very* nasty situation. The film begins promising but after first half an hour it loses tension and turns out to be a some kind of political conspiracy drama mixing with lame action sequences. If you think the bad guys in the film are only the religious fanatics, wait until the ATF agents appear. *SPOILER* To cover up their mistake, they start to shoot everyone, even children and a hostage. *SPOILER* "The government is corrupt too" subplot distracts attention from the fanatics' sinister acts. Not satisfactory in horror, nor in action but overall, I liked it.

The Ledge (2011)
The Ledge has been called the Brokeback Mountain for atheists, but that's not exactly true. Although there is a conflict between faith and reason, the film is a human drama revolving around tragic stories. Sure, it should be appreciated to offer an intelligent, and arguably likable (and talkative) atheist main character (and it doesn't cheat the viewer on this one) but the film never goes to deep, only presents the common arguments. So some arguments from the atheist side are a bit cliche and their only purpose is to serve the schematic writing. Not only dialogues, such as tender gay housemate of the main character is a stereotypical, and it's there for the homophobic neighbour. Luckily, some humor and small touches do the job well. A fundamentalist as an antagonist makes both main characters too much black and white and makes the plot unrealistic. However the film tells that atheist or not, we all are the victims of our miserable lives and even a non-believer can save the day!

Paul (2011)
Paul is an action-packed comedy featuring an alien (not wrong to call him an atheist) and two British sci-fi comic book nerds and it's full of religious satire! If you look at the IMDb board you can see many devoted Christians found that offensive and stupid. Believe me, it's a good sign for this film! (Just check the scene below to see what I mean.) That flick proves why the British humour is better than others: witty and hilarious! (one of the screenplay writers from Shaun of the Dead.)

Lourdes (2009)
Lourdes, famous pilgrimage place and holy theme park in France. Every year 5 million people visit here and expect to be healed by alleged holy water. Since 1860, over 200 million people have visited the shrine but scientifically nothing found about healing power of the water. The film tells a story of a disabled woman, named Christine who comes to Lourdes to be cured. The film was shot with the agreement of Church authorities but I think, it is dealing with the phenomenon from highly secular point of view. While we witness the insight and routine of this place, the dialogs force us to think about authenticity of the miracle. For example, after a small group watched a footage about an allegedly healed man, two women start to discuss together:
"Did you notice anything?"
"What?"
"The man who'd had the miracle, he was sitting down."
"Yes, so?"
"We didn't see him get up once."
"..."
"Doesn't that make you think?"
Just after Christine bathed with the holy water, she gets up and begins to walk. And that day, questions arise among the other pilgrims: Is this a miracle? Or is this just a temporary improvement? Why her, not me? And for Christine, what will happen to her after this event? Can she make a career and family and live happily ever after?
As one IMDb user stated that this artistic and cleverly written film portrays "commercial aspects of organised religion and the negative aspects of human nature masquerading as piety" and leaves us with questions at the depressing ending (in contrast to the song called Felicita means happiness).

Black Death (2010)
Middle-ages, pestilence, witchcraft and religion. The Catholic Church sent a group of soldiers and a young monk to a distant village to find heretics. But when the company arrived the village, the good and bad become uncertain. The Christian Crusaders are depicted as killing machines, they slaughter everyone who is against their faith, on the other hand the pagans are beautiful and charming but in the end their tricky natures reveal. So the story doesn't take sides, and it is open to interpretation: religion can be harmful in the hands of bad people, or religion itself is already bad for these people? The decision is yours. Lastly, the acting and visuals are top-notch and Sean Bean gave another great performance.

Bad Boy Bubby (1993)
A person who is imprisoned in a basement for more than thirty years and sexually abused by his cruel mother in this very room. When he gets a chance to go out, now he turns to an outsider in the middle of the unknown. This is the semi-surreal journey of a man-child Bubby. The film may not be to everyone's taste, especially the first thirty minutes is very dark and disturbing. The story is not linear, most of the time confusing but thought-provoking and intriguing. It has a very strong language against the religious subjects, it's totally godless, sometimes as harsh as Raoul Vaneigem's language. Although some extreme scenes, the main story is surprisingly very humane and touching. Very good example of a human can be good without religious superstitions.
Not suitable for minors.

You Don't Know Jack (2010)
TV is a stupid box--mostly (except Lost, duh!) Well, sometimes there are exceptions and this HBO production is one of them. The film is dealing with a controversial, compelling subject: should humans be given the right to die and euthanasia be legal in the US? As you guess, the story is about Dr. Jack Kevorkian, an American pathologist who invented a suicide machine. Kevorkian assisted suicide of those suffering with terminal illnesses. He ended up in court at last and became the target of religious activists. This has given rise to ethical and legal questions about euthanasia. Thanks to intelligent script and honest narrative, the film doesn't play with your emotions, just asks the right questions at the right time. Is Kevorkian really a mad man who plays God or an enthusiastic doctor and artist? Kudos to Pacino, for his killer performance as Kevorkian. I'm a great fan of Susan Sarandon but alas she has a very small role in this film.

The film based on a true story takes us to Iran and tells the story of an ordinary village woman who falsely accused of adultery by his husband. Just one day after her execution, a French-Iranian journalist Freidoune Sahebjam visits the village and he becomes the last hope of Soraya's aunt to carry the truth to out of the village. The Stoning of Soraya M. took place two decades ago, but what happened to Soraya is still happening today, rajm, capital punishment in Islam is still there. The story is simple, yet important. The details tell more than words can tell. It also portrays very well how patriarchy along with religious hypocrisy can be used against women who are only worthless beings in the eyes of men. The long, gruesome stoning scene is hard to watch, but each stone generates another feeling within the viewer, and Soraya's realistic reactions make the scene unforgettable.

Agora (2009)
Director Alejandro Amenábar had shown his talent in his very first movie, and now he proves his genius again. Agora is a magnificent, astounding cinematic masterpiece made me speechless. How Christians beautifully portrayed in cinema, Amenábar overturns this false image, takes revenge for Library of Alexandria, which sheltered the cultural heritage of man for hundred years, burned down by Christians (or any other religious people to the context) and honors Hypatia, who I called Carl Sagan of the Hellenes. I salute Amenábar for his courage.

Nine Miles Down (2009)
Nine Miles Down is a horror movie (the first on the blog) which brings fresh ideas into the genre. It follows the same tradition of The Thing or Silent Hill: isolation, delusions, fear of the unknown... But this movie breaks with the tradition with a unique twist. So my explanation is limited here because every word will spoil the movie. Well, I can only say that that one is based on gynophobia and saves the rational thought differs from the ordinary and brainless horror movies. Although the acting is not brilliant, I can easily say it's one of the most underrated movies of 2009, including religious references and a bit of dark humor.

Whatever Works (2009)
Woody Allen is at his best once again! Well, this movie got some negative reviews, but after watching it I disagreed with them. Whatever Works is smart, witty and extremely funny movie with full of sarcastic dialogues, as you expect from a Woody Allen work. He has never been hesitant in satirizing religion, or Christianity, however Whatever Works increases the dose and expresses Woody's ideas in a more atheistic tone. This hilarious scene explains much more:

Creation (2009)
Creation is a fascinating cinematic experience from start to finish, and it is hard to resist its captivating magic. Honestly, I was thinking that I would watch something like one of the ordinary biography documentaries, but I was totally wrong. The director Jon Amiel's nice touches and clever ideas create a subtle movie, make Darwin more human and more real. I sometimes laughed with joy and sometimes --I confess-- cried. Paul Bettany was brilliant in his role and Martha West was cute as Darwin's daughter Annie. The movie tells a short period of time, and mostly deals with the loss of Annie, and Darwin's personal dilemma before he published On the Origin of Species, but it's a rare opportunity to look from the eyes of a genius mind who "killed God".
